The 1,000 Cranes For Peace Project is a personal and communal reminder for peace in our world. Regardless of our background, our perspective or our way of life, we know that a hurting society hurts individuals and robs us all of our peace. The story of Sadako Sasaki and the ongoing Peace Crane projects is our inspiration and our guide. We are living in a time when people are fearful and people are hurting. We want to help others in some way but often feel helpless and many decisions are made well outside our power as ordinary inhabitants of this piece of Maryland. We are a community that does care about our fellow human beings and this project is an act of solidarity and connection with one another that we believe will bring about change.
We would love to get many thousands of cranes made and returned (which is A LOT of wishes) but our greater goal is to have thousands of people folding cranes; thousands of people focused on bringing peace to this world. As they are displayed, they will be a tangible sign that Hagerstown is a diverse and loving community and while we don’t agree on every issue we are willing to come together for the cause of peace.
This project arises from the mission of Eliza’s house which is “to promote the healing experience of marginalized individuals. Through holistic, creative engagement, and advocacy efforts, we will close existing gaps between oppressive systems and vulnerable individuals.” The bookstore on 25 E Franklin Street is our home base where Crane packets can be picked up and folded cranes can be dropped off and where the cranes will initially be displayed.
